5 Elements to Create a Dedicated Zen Space

Creating a dedicated Zen space in your home is the perfect way to relax through mediation, journaling and quiet time away from housemates and technological distractions. Your Zen space can be a corner of a room, on a bedroom end table, a windowsill or anywhere in your home that will allow you to set up a few relaxation items. I find it a useful daily practice to set aside time for yourself in your zen space whether it be it for self reflection, relaxation or creating, to maintain good mental well being.  The 5 elements I recommend to create a dedicated Zen space are lighting, scent, energy, a journal and decorating. I’ve included some of my favorite items in each category and the benefits you can receive from each one!

1. Lighting

Dim lighting will trigger your brain that it is time to relax. A Himalayan salt lamp not only provides a mellow orange glow, it has numerous health benefits like, cleaning the air and neutralizing electromagnetic radiation by emitting negative ions to cancel the positive ions that electronics like TVs, cell phones and computers produce. A Himalayan salt lamp is the perfect way to set the tone to your dedicated Zen space.

2. Scent

Aromatherapy with an oil diffuser creates a calming ambiance in your dedicated Zen space. Essential oils can help with relaxation, anxiety, stress, illness, pain, sleep and more. I recently started using an organic set of high-quality essential oils from Cliganic. The aromatherapy set comes with a recipe booklet with instructions on blending oils together to achieve different health benefits. Cliganic gets BONUS points for this because the blended scents smell so good!

3. Energy

Clearing the energy in your dedicated Zen space is super important in relaxation. White sage clears bacteria in the air and emits negative ions boosting your mood. Smudging or burning Palo Santo also has cleansing effects and is beneficial for healing, calming, depression and reducing inflammation. You can order both a smudge kit to clear your space and a smudge bowl to safely extinguish the flame and cinder.

Crystals are another way to enhance the energy in your Zen space. Crystals promote various types of healing however, you must be open to their healing properties for them to work their magic. Adding crystals to your Zen space specific to your needs could foster good health and creativity. Click here for a guide on crystals.

4. Journal

Keeping a journal in your dedicated Zen space can be a beneficial way to promote self-healing, foster creativity or declutter your mind before bed so, pestering thoughts are not keeping you awake at night.

5. Decorating

Decorating your relaxation area with other purposeful pieces is the 5th way to complete your dedicated Zen space. A Hamsa bowl is a pretty place to keep your crystals and has a dual purpose of warding off unwanted energy spirits like the “evil eye.” A marble tray is a beautiful addition to keep all your Zen items organized, clean and tidy.

Now that you have a good foundation on how to set up a dedicated Zen space in your home, have some fun getting it all set up and get ready to relax and enjoy the benefits of a clearer mind!
